To achieve this, major international standards establish the obligation to conduct an <strong data-start=\"1074\" data-end=\"1103\">Explosion Risk Assessment<\/strong> as one of the most important preventive measures. This evaluation is documented as a Dust Explosion Protection Document (DPCE) under the European ATEX Directives, or as a Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA) under NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) standards.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-acc006c elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"acc006c\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-9f17632\" data-id=\"9f17632\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8433a4e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8433a4e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>What Do Regulations Really Say About Dust Explosions in the Food Industry?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-dd95081 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"dd95081\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-d98e9b7\" data-id=\"d98e9b7\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5f9019a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5f9019a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A proper dust explosion risk assessment must define the <strong data-start=\"1525\" data-end=\"1576\">necessary prevention and\/or protection measures<\/strong> to minimize the likelihood of an accident and ensure a safe installation. To do this, the use of <strong data-start=\"1675\" data-end=\"1715\">internationally recognized standards<\/strong> is essential:<\/p><ul><li data-start=\"1469\" data-end=\"1650\"><strong data-start=\"1733\" data-end=\"1760\">European Standards (EN)<\/strong> derived from IEC standards, such as: EN 60079-10-1 and 10-2 (zoning classification), EN 1127-1 (ignition source evaluation), EN 14491 (explosion venting protection systems), CEN\/TR 16829 (bucket elevator protection and prevention).<\/li><li data-start=\"1469\" data-end=\"1650\"><strong data-start=\"2016\" data-end=\"2053\">VDI Guidelines (German standards)<\/strong> like VDI 2263 for the prevention and protection of explosions in bag filters and bucket elevators.<\/li><li data-start=\"1469\" data-end=\"1650\"><strong data-start=\"2156\" data-end=\"2185\">NFPA Standards (US-based)<\/strong> such as: NFPA 654: for fire and explosion prevention in solids handling industries, NFPA 61: for fire and explosion protection in agricultural and food processing facilities<\/li><\/ul><p><em>These standards are <strong data-start=\"2395\" data-end=\"2422\">not optional or generic<\/strong> \u2014 they directly apply to common processes involving combustible dust, such as pneumatic transport, screening, grinding or drying.<\/em><\/p><h2 data-start=\"2372\" data-end=\"2552\">Evaluating the Risk: Where Should You Start?<\/h2><p data-start=\"2612\" data-end=\"2775\">Risk analysis doesn&#8217;t begin and end with a zoning diagram. It&#8217;s a <strong data-start=\"2678\" data-end=\"2699\">technical process<\/strong> designed to anticipate incidents and support decision-making with evidence.<\/p><p data-start=\"2777\" data-end=\"2877\">According to international standards, a complete risk assessment should include the following steps:<\/p><ol data-start=\"2879\" data-end=\"3753\"><li data-start=\"2879\" data-end=\"3163\"><p data-start=\"2882\" data-end=\"3163\"><strong data-start=\"2882\" data-end=\"2915\">Identify flammable substances<\/strong> used in the process and determine their explosive parameters<br data-start=\"2976\" data-end=\"2979\" \/>(e.g. Minimum Ignition Energy, Minimum Ignition Temperature, Minimum Explosive Concentration),<br data-start=\"3076\" data-end=\"3079\" \/>either via certified lab testing or trusted databases (e.g. BIA, GESTIS DUST-EX).<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3165\" data-end=\"3312\"><p data-start=\"3168\" data-end=\"3312\"><strong data-start=\"3168\" data-end=\"3205\">Define the frequency and duration<\/strong> of explosive atmospheres in each zone (ATEX classification),<br data-start=\"3266\" data-end=\"3269\" \/>using EN 60079-10-1\/2 or VDI guidelines.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3314\" data-end=\"3478\"><p data-start=\"3317\" data-end=\"3478\"><strong data-start=\"3317\" data-end=\"3346\">Evaluate ignition sources<\/strong> present and their effectiveness (hot surfaces, mechanical sparks, electrostatic discharges, electric sparks, etc.) using EN 1127-1.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3480\" data-end=\"3560\"><p data-start=\"3483\" data-end=\"3560\"><strong data-start=\"3483\" data-end=\"3511\">Determine the risk level<\/strong> using assessment methodologies such as RASE2000.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3562\" data-end=\"3753\"><p data-start=\"3565\" data-end=\"3753\"><strong data-start=\"3565\" data-end=\"3627\">Define the necessary prevention and\/or protection measures<\/strong> to reduce the residual risk to an acceptable level using references like CEN\/TR 16829 for bucket elevators or NFPA standards.<\/p><\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-b893013 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"b893013\" storage<\/strong>:<br data-start=\"3957\" data-end=\"3960\" \/>For granular materials (barley, malt, corn, etc.) or powders (flour, sugar, spices).<\/li><li data-start=\"3918\" data-end=\"4046\"><strong data-start=\"4050\" data-end=\"4072\">Cleaning processes<\/strong>:<br data-start=\"4073\" data-end=\"4076\" \/>For granular products using equipment such as sieves and cleaners.<\/li><li data-start=\"3918\" data-end=\"4046\"><strong data-start=\"4148\" data-end=\"4160\">Grinding<\/strong>:<br data-start=\"4161\" data-end=\"4164\" \/>Typically used for granular materials with mills.<\/li><li data-start=\"3918\" data-end=\"4046\"><strong data-start=\"4219\" data-end=\"4236\">Powder mixing<\/strong>:<br data-start=\"4237\" data-end=\"4240\" \/>Using scales, feeders, and mixers.<\/li><li data-start=\"3918\" data-end=\"4046\"><strong data-start=\"4280\" data-end=\"4290\">Drying<\/strong>:<br data-start=\"4291\" data-end=\"4294\" \/>To reduce product moisture content, applicable to powders or granular materials.<\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section
